Essential Tips for Success in Your Journey to Quit Smoking

Sue Freeman RN | QuitCoach | Nicotine Recovery Advocate

Every day, thousands of people decide to quit smoking, hoping for the best but not always knowing what to expect. They step into the process thinking it will be tough—and too often, that's what happens. The cravings hit hard, withdrawal symptoms feel overwhelming, and the struggle seems never-ending. They turn to online groups, where people share how difficult quitting is, reinforcing that it's just pure suffering. But what if quitting didn't have to feel like a battle? What if you could set yourself up for success from the start?

Why Quitting Feels Like an Endless Battle

Many people start their quit journey without fully understanding what's happening to their brain and body. When nicotine leaves the system, withdrawal kicks in, but that's just the beginning. The challenge is that smoking has trained the brain to seek nicotine for relief, and without it, the brain signals distress. If someone isn't ready for this, every craving feels like a failure instead of a normal part of healing.

Most smokers try to quit by focusing only on willpower, without knowing how addiction rewires the brain. This makes the process overwhelming, especially when symptoms like irritability, anxiety, and brain fog appear. Everyone's experience is different, depending on their history with smoking and overall well-being—physical, mental, social, and even spiritual.

Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, explains: “Nicotine addiction is primarily a brain disease, and quitting involves retraining neural pathways. Understanding this can help individuals navigate cravings more effectively.”

A real-life example from an online quit group illustrates the struggle well:

“Today is my day 3 and I swear the world is out to get me …. Like EVERYTHING and EVERYONE is pissing me off 😠 I made this fake cigarette with a cotton ball and straw… it looks and sounds stupid, but I walked outside like I normally would, and it actually worked!!!”

Ms. X mimics smoking, reinforcing the addictive pattern and the deep-seated love for the habit.

This highlights a crucial point—without the right mindset shift, people rely on old habits rather than truly breaking free. I responded to Ms X. directly, recognizing her struggle and offering her a way forward:

Ms X., you are practicing what your brain knows to be true—you love smoking. But haven’t you made the decision to go smokefree and get that monkey off your back? What are you waiting for? Give yourself permission to live your best life. What did you love doing when you were a kid? Start creating a new, smokefree life today!

What struck me was that out of 60 replies to her post, few offered real advice—most were just more stories of struggle. No one pointed out that what she was doing was reinforcing her smoking pattern. This is where quit coach guidance makes all the difference. Seeking accurate advice can make you feel guided and supported, knowing that you're not alone in your journey.

The Smart Way to Quit: Break Free With Purpose

  1. Start With a Growth Mindset – Quitting is not about suffering, it’s about transformation. Shift from fear to empowerment.

  2. Understand the Detox and Withdrawal Process – Learn what nicotine withdrawal looks like and how it may affect you physically, mentally, and emotionally.

  3. Cravings Are Temporary—Recognize that cravings are part of the healing process. Prepare strategies to manage them, such as deep breathing, movement, and distraction techniques.

Cravings diminish significantly after the first 72 hours. They key is NOT to fight them.
  4. Support Your Brain and Body’s Healing Mechanisms – Nutrition, hydration, and movement help your body recover faster. Proper food choices can stabilize blood sugar, reducing withdrawal symptoms.

  5. Use the NEW START Approach – Use the NEW START Approach – (Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunshine, Temperance, Air, Rest, Trust). These foundational lifestyle habits strengthen your quit journey and overall well-being.

Developed on biblical health principals and promoted by various health professionals and organizations within the Seventh-Day Adventist Church

For instance, focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, engage in regular physical activity, ensure adequate hydration, spend time outdoors, practice self-control, breathe fresh air, get enough rest, and build trust in your ability to quit.

  6. Seek Support and Community – Humans are born to belong. Isolation is destructive to the body, soul, and spirit. Surround yourself with people who reinforce your new identity as an ex-smoker.

Sustaining Your smokefree Life: The Next Steps

Once you’ve built a strong foundation for quitting, the next step is sustaining your smokefree life long-term. Here’s what makes the difference:

  1. Understand the Reset Process – Your brain and body are healing, not punishing you. Cravings and discomfort are signals that healing is happening, not proof that you can’t do this. Dr. Judson Brewer, a neuroscientist and addiction expert, notes: “The way you frame quitting makes a huge difference. Those who view it as a transformation rather than deprivation have a higher success rate.” This understanding can bring a sense of relief and hope, knowing that each craving is a step towards freedom.

  2. Reframe the Experience – Instead of focusing on what you’re losing, focus on what you’re gaining: freedom, health, and control. Each craving is proof that you’re breaking free, not falling behind.

  3. Have a Long-Term Strategy – Nicotine withdrawal has patterns. If you know when and why cravings hit, you can plan ahead instead of reacting in the moment.

  4. Continue Training Your Mindset – If you tell yourself quitting is suffering, it will be. Your brain will align with the belief it's transformation. Keep reinforcing this daily.

  5. Stay Connected to Support – Encouragement matters, but so does guidance. Finding a space that teaches you why you’re experiencing symptoms—and how to move through them—makes the difference between struggling and succeeding.

Your Quit Journey Can Be Different

Quitting smoking means changing how you relax, cope, and focus. At first, the new habits you develop may not feel as satisfying as the buzz of nicotine, especially if you are surrounded by other smokers. Even if smoking no longer gives you much pleasure, your body still craves nicotine to feel "normal." This is why quitting takes full commitment—half-hearted attempts won't break the cycle.

If you seek support online, closely examine the advice being shared. Is it useful? Is it keeping you focused on solutions rather than struggles? Nicotine addiction recovery requires your full attention. Breaking free from Big Tobacco and Big Pharma means prioritizing your health, taking back control, and trusting that your body is made to thrive.

Your body is designed to breathe fresh air, digest nutritious food, and use water for hydration. You are meant to work, play, and create in an environment where you can grow. Anything less leads to seeking solace in things that can harm you.

Navigating social situations where others smoke can be challenging, but it's possible. Plan ahead—bring gum, excuse yourself when cravings hit, and remind yourself why you're quitting.
