Sue Freeman, RN | Quit Coach & Nicotine Recovery Advocate
I began nursing in the 1970s, carrying my own struggles with health and addiction into the work. Those early years — as both patient and nurse — shaped everything I now teach.
I created The Smokefree System: Taking Back Control after watching too many good people blame themselves for a brain-based condition they were never taught how to heal.
My work has been recognised by the Aotearoa New Zealand College of Nurses and the National Heart Foundation, but the qualification that matters most is this:
I have walked this road myself — and I know how hard it is to keep going when shame, fear, and relapse sit quietly in the background.
Quitting is not just about stopping a behaviour. It is about restoring safety to the nervous system, hope to the heart, and trust in yourself again.
With my guidance, you will not just quit — you will learn how to stay smokefree in the moments that used to pull you back. This is about building a life that no longer needs nicotine to cope.
When you are ready, I will walk with you.

I found this program a clear, concise, and logical, easy to follow method of handling weight gain from, quitting smoking. I would highly recommend it to anyone, who not only quit smoking, but who has gained weight for any other reason. It helps so much and it works
Shirley

I was able to stop smoking easily and never looked back. I think your program is excellent.

The Smokefree System is a unique smoking cessation program that stands out from others in several key ways. Based on nursing theory and the experiences of hundreds of smokers and quitters, our program is designed to meet you where you are, without limiting you to a set number of sessions or a prescribed course. We don't rely on cessation medications as a fallback when things get tough. Instead, we focus on helping you manage your health and well-being as you quit, without the need for additional medications.
Sue, our expert, has investigated and utilized research and neuroscience to address the challenges of quitting and maintaining long-term abstinence. Our program focuses on solving issues such as weight gain, cravings, metabolic disorders, disease, and retained products of smoking. We emphasize self-healing and holistic care for the body, soul, and spirit. Sue believes that a basic understanding of the human body is essential to healing and recovering from addiction. She often says, "You wouldn't fix a high-end car without understanding its mechanics. Similarly, understanding how your body works is crucial to successfully quitting smoking and maintaining a healthy, smokefree life."
Key Points of Difference:
1. Personalized Approach: Tailored support to your unique needs and circumstances.
2. No Cessation Medications: Focus on managing health and well-being without additional medications.
3. Flexible Quit Date: You set your quit date, and we support you in managing the process.
4. Holistic Support: Addressing the addiction and managing it alongside any health and life issues.
5. Comprehensive Care: Support that goes beyond just quitting smoking, addressing the broader context of your life.
In essence, The Smokefree System offers a compassionate, flexible, and holistic approach to quitting smoking, focusing on your individual journey and needs.

The Smokefree System was used in the Hospitals and Public Health Service of a region of New Zealand in a face-to-face service, both on a singular and group basis, with a 95% success rate. However, this is the first time the program has been taken online in an interactive platform. Your feedback, time, and effort are crucial for our success and your success. We appreciate the opportunity to help you and look forward to supporting you on your journey to a smokefree life.

While relapse is an expected part of most programs, we don't factor it into The Smokefree System. When you learn about relapse, you'll understand this approach better. If you stop smoking for the rest of your life, it means never smoking again. I teach a golden rule: Not a single puff. We also embrace the concept of being "smoke-aholics." I was primed to smoke in my mother's womb, and the house was tainted with nicotine and the chemicals of combustion. By the time I took my first puffs, I was hooked. It took 17 years to stop, and it nearly killed me. It's crazy to think you might decide to have a slip-up, but if you do, know that it's a choice you make. We'll support you through your decision until you're back on track because we know you'll regret it. Many people end up smoking again for three years after a 'slip.' It's not worth the risk, right? If you want to stop having to stop smoking, you have to let go of the idea of relapsing and lift your heart towards the notion of being free at last! I hope you will join us on this journey to a smokefree life.

Big Tobacco did not invent vaping. The first modern e-cigarette was created in 2003 by a Chinese pharmacist named Hon Lik. For a while, smaller companies in the “Big Vape” scene led the charge, promoting vaping as a smoking alternative. But when Big Tobacco saw the money to be made, they began buying out vape companies and launching their own brands—taking over the market and using the same marketing tricks that once sold cigarettes. So no, they didn’t start it—but they’ve certainly tried to control it ever since.
